I'm having this same problem since I upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid release candidate a day before final release.

The difference compared Elias' case is that when this starts to happen for me, it repeats until X is restarted. It's impossible to switch user without logging the user out. This seems to repeat almost every time when I'm trying to switch user. I've tried Nvidia binary driver versions 96 and 173 from the repo and problem repeats for both.

Again I'm having the same problem since the upgrade from Hardy to Intrepid (upgraded mid-November). User switching worked perfectly with the previous release. I have tried reinstalling the fast-user-switch-applet but no change.

I'm using the NVidia binary driver version 177

I also get a dialog box reporting a Graphical System Error. See attached.

Upgrading to the Nvidia driver 180.06 direct from Nvidia's web site fixed this problem for me. I can now logout and switch users without problem.

P.s. Tried it with and without desktop effects enabled and it seems to work in all cases.

I'm still having this problem with an up to date Intrepid, using the open source radeon driver.
The error is the same as for Elias, as you can see in the attached Xorg log.

Unfortunately nvidia driver upgrade didn't solve the problem for me.

However the situation has changed a bit - with the new driver *sometimes* I can start a new session in the first try - but usually it fails
Unfortunately It seems to be random...

nvidia driver upgraded to 180.16

Hi !
Same error for me.
But I'm not using the proprietary driver, I'm using the free one (nv_drv.so)
I attached the lspci -vvnn

Sounds like this is long since fixed. Feel free to reopen if it still is a problem in Jaunty.
