Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

By default Ubuntu uses VESA for ati 4650.

The binary driver for ati does not support the 4650 (it only supports 48xx out of the 4xxx) series. I have tried both the restricted driver that you get by clicking the picture of the card on the panel and the latest ATI drivers (ati-driver-installer-8-10-x86.x86_64) Both fail with the same error. (no screens found)

Although Ubuntu cannot fix ATIs closed source drivers, it would be nice if there was some 3D acceleration and support for high LCD resolutions (perhaps via the open source drivers).

I Just tried installing the ATI 8.10 drivers again. This time it worked. Wierd. Athough ATI does not claim to support the 46xx cards on their driver page, I remember seeing a webpage claiming that support was added in 8.9. Hardy's xserver-xorg-video-ati is 6.8.0-1. Presumably Intrepid will have 8.9 or later and this problem will fix itself. I am guessing this problem is fix released, although I have not tried Intrepid.

Assuming it's fixed with the Intrepid -ati driver.
