Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

On my Lenovo X61 Tablet I've been running Compiz since Hardy. It worked fine when I upgraded to the Intrepid beta, but while trying to determine what was causing a crash (it turned out to be the wireless drivers) I switched from "Normal" effects to "None". Now I can't switch back. When I try gnome-appearance-properties outputs:
There is no available graphics driver for your system which supports the composite extension, or the current one already supports it.
Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
Trying again with indirect rendering:

/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Error: Could not acquire compositing manager selection on screen 0 display ":0.0"
/usr/bin/compiz.real (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

and shows a dialog saying "Desktop effects could not be enabled" (Ok)

If I switch to vt1 (ie: alt-ctrl-F1) I can launch "compiz --replace" and successfully switch to compiz. I'm confused.
