Bug Description

Binary package hint: grass

When starting up grass, I get this error message, and no GUI comes up (only splash screen for a little while),
then there's the grass shell prompt. Typing "gis.m" also showes this error:

Grass used to work flawlessly on my system but I started getting exactly the same problem after updating to Ubuntu 8.10.

Using the deb with exactly the same version of grass from debian's repository works perfectly fine in intrepid.

The bug is most likely caused by a broken GDAL package.
Please report the output of:

g.region -p

Some weeks ago I installed grass with the deb (same version) from debian, which worked fine for me so far.
Today I purged the debian deb and installed the ubuntu deb to add the output to the bug report. However, no error even with the ubuntu package today. Maybe the bug can be closed now?!

Anyway, here's the output of g.region -p:

Since you get useful output, the report can be closed.

I did a complete removal of GRASS and gdal from my system. I also remove the files .grass6rc from my home dir and created a new grassdata folder. Then I reisntalled GRASS from Ubuntu repository. However, I still get the same error.

When I try g.region -p, the result is "Segmentation fault".

In tis case, apparently the Ubuntu 8.10 GDAL package is still broken. Is there any trace if it was updated? I don't know where to check that.

I also reinstalled gdal when I reinstalled GRASS from the Ubuntu repository as described above. I have the latest version 1.5.2-2.

I did as Rian and installed grass from the Debian repository. And it worked! However, when I removed it and reinstalled from the Ubuntu repository, it didn't work, as it worked for him. So I am removed it again and I am now using the version from Debian.

Good to hear that! but is there hope to get it updated in Ubuntu, too? Who's the packager we could contact?

Bernardo Mello (bmello67) wrote :

I don't think it is a matter of updating Ubuntu, since the GRASS version I downloaded from debian is the same available at Ubuntu repositories (6.2.3-2.1).

I suspect that the *GDAL* package in Ubuntu is breaking GRASS.

The GRASS package from the official repositories (6.2.3-2.1) is working again, now that I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04.

Too bad it is not GRASS 6.3 yet.

I guess so.
Grass works like a charm now.
