Bug Description

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evtouch

On my laptop Panasonic Toughbook CF-29, the touchpad is unusable when the evtouch driver is enabled in xorg.conf. However, without the evtouch driver, the touchscreen does not report touch events so I would really like to have both touchpad and touchscreen. The mouse cursor does not move at all when using the touchpad or sort of jumps immediately back to its original position, it looks like it were jumping 10-20 pixels in the direction of the move and than back.

The system is currently Kubuntu 8.04.01 fully up to date and the problem occurred after an upgrade from 7.10. I have tried all sorts of changes in xorg.conf without success.

The current config is attached.

The 'xinput list' command outputs the following about the touchpad:

"Touchpad" id=5 [XExtensionPointer]
        Num_buttons is 9
        Num_axes is 2
        Mode is Relative
        Motion_buffer is 256
        Axis 0 :
                Min_value is -1
                Max_value is -1
                Resolution is 1
        Axis 1 :
                Min_value is -1
                Max_value is -1
                Resolution is 1

'xinput test Touchpad' reports events when I touch the pad, it also correctly reports button presses.

Upgrade to Kubuntu Interpid Ibex 8.10 helped. The upgrade process removed both touchpad and touchpad sections from the xorg.conf file. I had to restore the touchscreen sections to get the touch screen calibrated and use the evtouch driver (would like to see how to do this via hal) but now both touchpad and touchscreen work simultaneously.

Hi merka,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Hi Bryce,

I forgot to back up the Xorg.0.log before upgrading to Kubuntu 8.10, sorry. The current configuration and log are attached. The touchscreen (evtouch) and touchpad now work at the same time.

Evtouch is going to be removed from the archive starting in natty, closing bugs that become obsolete due to that. Use the 'evdev' driver for touchscreens.
