Bug Description

When starting Ubuntu 8.10 I get the following warning in .xsession-errors:

x-session-manager[8402]: WARNING: Unable to find provider 'gnome-wm' of required component 'windowmanager'

here is another warning in .xsession-errors probably related to this bug:

x-session-manager[8402]: WARNING: Application 'gnome-wm.desktop' failed to register before timeout

It takes a long time to login into GNOME and I suspect that 'gnome-wm.desktop' timeout could be responsible for that.

This is related to Bug 292376 - It seems that turning off compiz fixes the slow login... but that is not an acceptable solution.
