Bug Description
I just upgraded to the 8.10 Beta for Ubuntu and noticed that when you choose the recommended NVIDIA driver 177, it makes the fans run at full speed all the time. I have my idle temp at 46 and the fans were still running full blast. I deactivated it and then activated the other 173 driver version and the problem seems to have stopped. The bug seems to only affect the recommended version 177 which brings to question why is it recommended? Other Dell XPS 1330 users have experienced the same thing.

This may be the version of your card and not the driver. I have a desktop with the 8800GTS card and the only time the fan revs in to high is when resuming from suspend. I am wondering if you have one of the 'defective' cards as well.
Can you give us more details as to the card version?
Thanks,
