Ubuntu 8.10 doesn't detect floppy drive!

Alright so Ubuntu 8.10 fully updated as of today October 20, 2008 doesn't detect my floppy drive.

I can't find it in the "places" section on the gnome panel or in the "Computer" section in nautilus.

There is no "floppy" or "floppy0" in the "/media" folder but everything else works fine.

Trying to mount manually gives this:

It has been reported 4 times - it seems really confirmed by now

The floppy drive has the activity led always on, and does not show up on Gnome at all.
As alienexplorers suggested on bug 290587, the floppy drive can be accessed with

sudo modprobe floppy

followed by

sudo mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy0
(given that /media/floppy0 exists).
