Bug Description

I've started to see this error during otherwise-normal system operation since one of the recent kernel updates. Earlier Intrepid 2.6.27 kernels did not show this error. It is followed by several more messages whose meaning is unclear to me:

Oct 15 10:28:08 perseus kernel: [84629.621056] ACPI: EC: missing confirmations, switch off interrupt mode.
Oct 15 10:28:09 perseus kernel: [84630.126650] ACPI Exception (evregion-0419): AE_TIME, Returned by Handler for [EmbeddedControl] [20080609]

Older logs show it has been happening since approximately 23 September:

The error occurs after about 2 to 4h uptime for some time now. When this happens, the keyboard gets very unresponsive and the only way to fix this seems to be a reboot.

UBUNTU: SAUCE: [PATCH] ACPI: EC: do transaction from interrupt context

    Bug: #277802

It is easier and faster to do transaction directly from interrupt context
    rather than waking control thread.
Also, cleaner GPE storm avoidance is implemented.

It's plenty of them, one after one every few seconds; never had that entries on Hardy.

I was having these on an irregular basis until I installed a test kernel based on the upcoming -11 kernel. There is an ACPI flood detection fix for non-interrupt access which looks likely the base of the fix. If those who were seeing this extensively could try the kernel at the URL below and report back:

I'm still seeing this issue on a Macbook 2,1 with the 2.6.27.11 kernel on intrepid AMD 64.

This is the last thing logged before the computer freezes (unable to restart X, unable to SSH in via wireless network).

I'm not sure this is the cause of the freeze, but it is the last line logged.

During boot sometimes it locks, and when pressing any key (Ctrl is enough) it continues. (this means that the OS waiting for an interrupt). However, after a couple of minutes, the system completely hangs, and I must brute-power-off it to recover from the crash.

The only way to boot is to enable "acpi=off" in /boot/grub/menu.lst, but this way there are other issues:
- Obviously no standby option, and you must hold down the power button on shutdown;
- No more bluetooth by pressing the BT key
- HOT temperature!!! I think it could be dangerous!
- no CPU frequency scaling, so the battery decharges fast
- Ctrl+S in any program doesn't work (!!! this made me laugh :-) )

I've also read on other bug reports that it should be a BIOS issue, that can be fixed by loading a custom DSDT file.

I attach some logs and my dsdt file.

The ACPI error went away when I upgraded to 2.6.31-rc8, but the EC
interrupt mode is still switched off whenever I resume. Sometimes it is
accompanied by a "GPE interrupt storm" message.

Any progress on this? Still seeing this regularly in kern.log on Karmic beta with 2.6.31-14.

Usually is logged within a few moments of bootup. Though, I had one instance logged at just over one second into boot process.

You are right. It doesn't have to take so long. Perhaps you would like
to have a patch ready tomorrow or hire a developer to prepare one next
week? Your contribution would be welcome.
