Bug Description

I installed the beta of Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex) on a Dell Mini / Inspiron 910.

Immediately after rebooting, I ran the Update Manager, and after running for a while, it came up with a dialog box:

An error occurred
The following details are provided:
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

So I'm reporting it.

Thanks for your report. affecting to update-manager.

This may be a transient situation due to another instance of update-manager running, or an update of the package database running in the background.

Can you wait a moment, and retry later. Report here if it's still an issue.

Thanks in advance.

Well, when I click OK the dialog goes away and everything continues (apparently) just fine.

HOWEVER, I tried a complete re-installation, and the exact same thing happened. So although it is seemingly a minor error and easily bypassed, it also seems to be something that an entirely new user to Ubuntu would quickly run into and wonder what was going on.

If the source of the bug cannot be fixed, perhaps the error message could at least say something like "Try again in a minute"

Sorry for my late reply. If this is reproducible could you please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade and /var/log/apt/term.log to this bug report.

Thanks.
