Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx

On intrepid, running elisa with the fglrx ati driver gives a distorted screen. See the attached screenshot.

This is with an ATI HD 3200 graphics card.

This looks like a driver issue. How other OpenGL apps work?

The opengl screensavers show allright.

What does it look like with the open-source -ati drivers?

With open source ATI the graphics are as they should be (but painfully slow though, elisa is really unusable that way). Same for the opengl screensavers.

Sounds like hardware 3D acceleration is not working with the open-source driver, and software rendering is used. I think your card is R600-based and 3D is work-in-progress.

Yes, I know that, and I would be very happy once that fully works. But the bug is with fglrx, but I guess it is not very likely to get fixed as it is closed source. Or are bugs like these forwarded to ati somehow? Is it useful at all to report bugs here against the fglrx driver?

Are you using compiz?

Yes, but it I get the same results both with compiz enabled and disabled.

Wouter, yes, it is useful to report fglrx bugs here. If only for other users who experience the issue to know that the problem is in the fglrx driver. And to document the trouble with this closed-source driver. And track any workarounds available or fixes in newer releases.

I have this bug too, but it is a little bit confusing.
The screen is only in fullscreen that mess of colors.
If I switch with the "f" key to window mode, everything runs fine!

Hi wouterstomp,

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

It has to be a problem in ATI graficcard and OpenGL rendering.
I have the same distorted grafic in mythtv menu when i use OpenGL as theme painter.
When i change it to Qt as theme painter, everything in mythtv menu is going alright.

-fglrx does not yet support Compiz + OpenGL (e.g. see bug 179042).

We'll focus this bug only on elisa + fglrx with no Compiz loaded (as per comment #10).

Wouter, I do report some bugs upstream to AMD, however we must have complete info and steps to reproduce before we forward them. We're still waiting on you to provide your Xorg.0.log, lspci -vvnn, and xorg.conf.

For some additional data, this happens in mythtv too if you choose the opengl menu painter.

There seems to be a workaround for this bug.

Simply start elisa or myth as a superuser (sudo or gksudo) and the fullscreen corruptions are gone. Weird, innit?

Yes, I can confirm that using sudo it works perfectly.
