Bug Description

I'm looking for "pand" on Ubuntu 8.10 (64bit) Beta. If I call it an info message appears which introduces me to install "bluez-utils" package, but this is still installed. The pand man page also exists. So what's going on?
I still trying to get a PAN connection to my XDA Orbit 2 (HTC Touch Cruise) to use the Internet Connection Sharing ...

A little udate: After today's update the call of pand results in a "Command not found".

hidd, dund and pand binaries from bluez 3.x series have been deprecated in favor of new bluez 4.x framework where things should "just work". If you still need pand binary, try installing bluez-compat (from universe repository).

Does this solve your issue?

Changed in bluez-utils:
status: New → Incomplete

Hi.

Thanks for the first answer on this strange behavior!

Hmm, partially this answer helps me. BUT ( ;) ) how does "just work"
works? I mean, what do I have to do to get an bluetooth PAN connection?
Is there any "nearer" info out there?

So, many thanks again!

So long,
Holger

I reckon the the goal is to use NetworkManager to talk with Bluez (via DBus), but the NetworkManager doesn't have proper support for bluetooth PAN/DUN yet. As for "just work" bit - NetworkManager should automatically discover available interfaces of the paired bluetooth devices.

This is just my guess though as I'm unfamiliar with bluetooth PAN/DUN. If you're able to get things working with compat binaries, it's all good.

Fine, then I will have a look on these "spooky" just working support and
use the compat binaries instead. These works fine for me (I just use a
PAN to go online and write this answer ;) ).

Thanks for the help!

Right, this is not actually a bug as bluez-compat contains the pand binary. You can convert this to a question if you have any further questions about the subject.

Possible remaining bugs, according to the report:

  1. Running pand says "please install bluez-utils" according to the first comment.
This does not agree with my experience, where running pand on Intrepid says
"pand: command not found" and doesn't suggest installing any package.

In either case, it should suggest installing "bluez-compat".

  2. Upgrading Hardy to Intrepid should install bluez-compat if bluez-utils was
previously installed, shouldn't it? For some people, pand disappearing means
their only internet connection disappears. It's fiddly to recover without internet!

(A third bug, perhaps, is that NetworkManager doesn't support "Mobile Broadband" half as well as it claims to. Apart from not supporting the PAN methods of connecting over Bluetooth, when I created a connection in it (presumably it uses RFCOMM), I couldn't find any way to *use* that connection! Where's the start/stop option? But that's a different bug report.)
