Binary package hint: compiz
When desktop effects are enabled the monitor on my thinkpad x31 (ati radeon 7000, opensource radeon driver) wont sleep. After a period of inactivity the display will slowly dim as if it were going to blank the screen, but just as it gets to black it comes back to full brightness again (as if i had poked the trackpoint/
If i disable compiz, and use metacity the monitor sleeps as expected.
this bug seems similar to Bug #273484 . However the Nvidia users report that their problem happens both with compiz and metacity. So i believe these may be separate issues.
