Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. In order to determine if this issue is usplash related, would you boot your computer with usplash disabled and then shutdown to see if you can reproduce the issue? To disable usplash for a single boot, you can follow these steps :

1.Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2.Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press "e" to edit it.
3.Select the "kernel" line and press "e" to edit it.
4.At the end of the line, remove "splash" and "quiet" and press "enter".
5.Type "b" to boot the custom boot line.

I followed your instructios.

At certain point, it stopped. I had to press space key ( or any other) and keep it pressed to finish the boot.
I installed the system twice- first from a cd and then from update, and it keep happening.

I made a upgrade to version 8.1 in my desktop also, and it runs well. Only in the notebook I'm having the problem.

I have the same problem with my Compaq Presario F700 (F756NR). I have to keep a key press throughout the whole boot process for it to finish. I also have noticed that when shutting down, i have to press a key once for it to finish shutting down. I tried it without usplash and had the same problems.
