Bug Description

Binary package hint: kdepim

On current Intrepid with KDE4 I get this:

ed@potpal:~$ knotes
knotes(16517): Communication problem with "knotes" , it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." "

ed@potpal:~$ kontact
<unknown program name>(19353)/: Communication problem with "kontact" , it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." "

Both are version 4:4.1.2-0ubuntu1

kmail and korganizer are already running and are fine.

Something is seriously boogered:

ed@potpal:~$ ps -fe|grep scim-panel-gtk|wc -l
121

After killing all those instances, knotes and kontact popped up.

Pretty much a scim issue I guess ;-)

The culprit is most likely skim. Please purge the skim package (yes, with 'k') from your system and see if the problem goes away. The reason is that skim was installed by default, but has not been ported to qt4 yet. Therefor it causes problems like this in a qt4 environment.

These "miraculously" started working some time this week so I can't directly test this any more.

However, I found another program that won't start, both before and after removing scim. Here's the paste from my konsole:

$ gvim
/usr/bin/scim

<long pause, nothing happens>

Hit ctrl-c and:
^CICE default IO error handler doing an exit(), pid = 8259, errno = 4

what is the status of the gvim issue?

Thank you for reporting. I think this may be fixed in 1.4.9 which is about to be released in Karmic. Please verify.

pemryan, do you have the skim package installed? Did you purge and reinstall it as advised? Can you reproduce the problem with another, freshly created user? Do you have 1.4.9 of scim installed and are you running karmic?
