applications menu won't appear

Bug Description

Over the last two days I've seen this happen twice. The 'places' and 'system'
menu are both fine, but if I try to open the 'applications' menu, it appears for
a tiny fraction of a second and is then replaced by a small white square. See
the attached screenshot.

I've tried removing the menu bar from the panel and adding it again, but that
doesn't fix it.

Logging out of GNOME and back in fixes the problem.

I've not been able to work out what triggers this.

I logged out of GNOME and back in. The first time I tried to open the
applications menu, it opened OK. Subsequent times I tried, it was back to the
little white square.

I logged out and back in a second time and the same thing happened. The
applications menu worked once, but only once.

This is with the current dapper packages by the way.
