Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-media

I spent hours and hours going through forums and trying all kinds of settings to make default Gnome Sound Recorder to work. All other sound features are working great. This bug is extremely frustrating to me because I have to return to Windows to record audio - as soon as this bug is fixed I can format my windows xp hard drive.

Steps to recreate the problem:
1. start playing an audio track or internet stream - same results with both
2. open sound recorder.
3. click the record button.
4. stop audio track.
5. stop recording.
6. play recording. I am expecting to hear the audio track - instead I am hearing a hiss.

Next steps:
7. open alsamixer and turn everything up, turn on all capture.
8. repeat - still no recording - it is capturing a hiss only.

more steps.
9. retry steps 1-6 recording in turn (using "record from input" dropdown options: pcm, synth, line-in, cd, microphone (with mic), mic boost (with mic). Result was the same, no recording, only a hiss.

last thing I tried:
10. uninstall OSS and retry 1-9. No recording- hiss only.

I am not sure what all I should print here, but I will try to put everything I can think of:

Ubuntu 8.04

per modprobe, the soundcard module is: snd-cmipci. snd-cmipci matches what the ALSA project says is the driver for my soundcard.

as far as i know gnome-sound-recorder is not capable for such a thing.

streamripper is what you're looking for. You can install it from add/remove programs. (try streamtuner or kstreamripper for a frontend)

http://streamripper.sourceforge.net/

hope this helps.
