Bug Description

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

After one of the many updates of Intrepid Ibex, Firefox says that the Flash plugin is missing, but I have the flashplugin-nonfree package installed. It does not work with Epyphany, so I guess there's something wrong with the package.

I've reinstalled it and uninstalled and installed again, but none of this approaches worked.

Thanks in advance!!

Yup, same here. I tried purging firefox and flashplugin-nonfree, as well as deleting my mozilla profile.
Here's the contents of /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/:
flashplugin-alternative.so mplayerplug-in-rm.xpt
mplayerplug-in-dvx.so mplayerplug-in.so
mplayerplug-in-dvx.xpt mplayerplug-in-wmp.so
mplayerplug-in-qt.so mplayerplug-in-wmp.xpt
mplayerplug-in-qt.xpt mplayerplug-in.xpt
mplayerplug-in-rm.so

BTW, flash does NOT appear in firefox's about:plugins

This is because ubuntu is missing some symbolic links that flashplugin likes.

workaround:

cd /usr/lib
sudo ln -s libsmime3.so.1d libsmime3.so
sudo ln -s libssl3.so.1d libssl3.so
sudo ln -s libnss3.so.1d libnss3.so

and you should be all set.

Confirmed that I have the same problem (on Intrepid, with flashplugin-nonfree). Specifically, Firefox prints this out to console on startup:

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so [libnss3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so [libnss3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]
LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree/libflashplayer.so [libnss3.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory]

When I have libnss3-1d package installed already.

Flash does not play in Firefox and does not appear in my plugins list.

Håvard H. Garnes' workaround (symlinks) solves this problem for me.

I would suggest this is a high priority. If Ubuntu is being billed as an "easy to use" OS (which it is these days), well the first thing average users are going to do is load up Firefox and go to YouTube. Having to sudo at the console will turn them away immediately.

Håvard H. Garnes fix worked for me. This is newly upgrade 8.04->8.10 installation.

Reinstallation of flashplugin-installer in Synaptic fixed the problem. I'm using Sabily 11.04 Badr 32-bit which is based on Ubuntu 11.04.
