Problem is that your printer needs a firmware file which must be loaded into the printer each time the printer is turned on. The file is under a proprietary license and therefore not shipped with the distribution.
This is solved in Jaunty and Karmic. In these Ubuntu versions system- config- printer automatically calls a tool of the HPLIP package which downloads HP's firmware files through the internet. In Hardy you need to call this tool manually. Try at first to run
sudo hp-plugin -i
in a terminal window. If this does not work, try
sudo apt-get install hplip-gui
sudo hp-setup
If you have to use the second solution, you will get a wizard creating a new print queue for your printer and downloading the firmware file. Remove your old print queue afterwards. The first command only downloads the firmware file.
Now turn off and turn on your printer to trigger the firmware upload into the printer. From now on your printer should work.
