Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.27

Booting fails with generic 2.6.27-6 kernel on Intrepid. I have an ATI Radeon Mobility 9700. The grub screen shows and then when I choose to boot Ubuntu 2.6.27-6 the screen turns black and then slowly fades to white. I did not have this problem with 2.6.27-5 or 2.6.27-4. I can boot into 2.6.27-5 fine.

Description: Ubuntu intrepid (development branch)
Release: 8.10

I can confirm a similar problem with 2 NVidia Geforce GTX 280 in SLI configuration. The problem occurs with kernels 2.6.27-6 and 2.6.27-5 as well as 2.6.27-4. When using the splash kernel-paramter (v86d is installed), the screen turns black shortly after the booting of the kernel starts and stays black. In the beginning there is still some hard-disk activity for some time, but the screen just stays black. I hoped for X to show up after waiting some time, but this did not happen. In the end the system seems to be running properly, apart from the issue that there is no real graphics output.

A workaround for now is to remove the splash parameter from the grub configuration and so booting without the eye-candy of the splash-screen.

This is fixed for me with 2.6.27-6.

Actually 2.6.27-6 does not fix this. It appears to be the v86d package. I had installed it about the time the kernel upgrade occurred. I removed this and I have performed several cycles and have not had a problem. With v86d the behavior varies, sometimes I get the white screen, sometimes I get a usplash screen but with strange colors and resolutions, once I did get the correct splash screen.

Hi Pat,

I'm reassigning this to the v86d package based on your last comment.

Do you still have this problem on 12.04 or later?

I no longer have this hardware. I haven't seen this behavior in a long time.
