Problems with Brother printers and openoffice.org seem to always crop up and generally the only printer issues that I can recall are using Brother printers, is this a cupsys issue or something with a driver the user got from somewhere else?

When you say nothing happens, do you mean that the document doesn't even get put into the printing que? (the printing icon does not appear in in the system tray with a document to print)

Would you please post some log files that might help track down the issue? This is a file where CUPS writes information about what it is doing. Almost all printing problems can be diagnosed from the error log, so it is the first place to look to start solving problems. To be useful, you must change the logging level:

1.Select "System" -> "Administration" -> "Printing" in the main menu of your desktop. The printer setup tool system-config-printer will open. Select "Server Settings" in the list on the left. Then check the check box "Save debugging information for troubleshooting" and click "Apply".

   2. In /etc/cups/cupsd.conf, find the line "LogLevel ..."; change it to" LogLevel debug"; save.
   3. 'sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart'
   4. Try to print something.
   5. Add /var/log/cups/error_log as an attachment to the bug report.

Changed in cupsys:
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: New → Incomplete

I have the same problem here on Ubuntu 8.04. When I try to print from oowriter, the document gets put in the queue but with the status "held". If I right click and choose release, it goes quickly back to "held" and nothing is printed. Incidentally, I cannot print from Evince but I can from Acrobat (and all the Print Test Page commands work as expected)...
