Bug Description

I'm having a kernel freeze sometimes during the boot, but there is no log in /var/log

I booted without the "splash" and "quiet" option to see more debug, but unfortunately the output was not visible because graphic was totally corrupted.

I also added the option vga=normal to see if the screen corruption does not present anymore, but this didn't help.

this bug happens sometimes (once every 4-5 boots) since linux 2.6.27 and it is present now in 2.6.27-7-generic
There was a similar problem in earlier 2.6.26, but it could be workarounded by removing "splash". Now the problem is present even without "splash".

I have an HP laptop dv6627el, 2Gb ram, 1.66 Core2duo, intel x3100

The 2.6.27-6 Ubuntu kernel was most recently released. It would be great if you could test and verify if this is still an issue with this newest kernel. If the issue still exists, per the kernel team's bug policy, can you please attach the following information. Please be sure to attach each file as a separate attachment.

* cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

Ok, I havn't found yet a way to always reproduce the problem, so maybe
we'll have to wait a bit

I am just wondering, whether your report is also a duplicate of bug 263059 As you can see, hangs observed there are not observed always.

Do you have Intel 3945 wireless? If yes may you, please, switch it off
via BIOS and see, whether this will resolve the issue.

Don't have that wireless.
Quite sure mine is related to a graphic problem, since the screen gets corrupted

I found a way to reproduce the bug:

start the game spore (through wine of course)
the system will crash
reboot and have the hard freeze

I was wrong about the moment in which the freeze happens.
It is after / is mounted, and *maybe* when the console look changes
from "bold" to "smooth"
I don't know if I was clear, but during the boot there's a moment in
which the font layout changes, and this may be the moment of the crash

This seems similar to a problem I'm seeing on my Vaio SZ. Kernel is 2.6.27-7-generic.

Randomly on a cold boot it will hard lock. With "splash" removed from the boot arguments, the last messages onscreen are (this is a hand-copy):

 * Loading hardware drivers...
[ 20.747612] iTCO_wdt: failed to reset NO_REBOOT flag, reboot disabled by hardware
[ 22.623203] uvcvideo: Failed to query (135) UVC control 1 (unit 0) : -32 (exp. 26)
[ 22.623442] uvcvideo: Failed to query (129) UVC control 1 (unit 0) : -32 (exp. 26)
[ 22.623523] uvcvideo: Failed to initailize the device (-5).

There is an audiable click just before the lock.

Power button will respond to a held-press to power off. No flashing leds. Usually I boot the machine with the nvidia GPU enabled, rather than onboard video, but I am yet to confirm it happens with both.

Just a question: after the block can you still see the display content
or is it corrupted?

No corruption with either GPU enabled. (And the lock happens regardless of which GPU I select to boot with.)

Ok, my case *always* shows display corruption. In fact this is the
problem, since I cannot see the debug printed on the screen

With quiet and splash removed, last messages are:

[ 19.966377] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: power state changed by ACPI to D0
[ 19.966457] HDA Intel 0000:00:1b.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 21 (level, low) -> IRQ 21

But, earlier in the output, I see:

[ 19.878945] iwl3945 0000:06:00.0: PCI INT A disabled

Sometimes on a hard lock, this happens before the HDA Intel messages, sometimes not.

It seems that you don't experience this bug, since I cannot see
anything when the system is blocked.

But on the forums I found a topic on this bug
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=947219
