Bug Description

New install of 8.10, to a Toshiba M700, no sound whatsoever.

Undertook all recommendations @ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems

Uploaded info at:

http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=1522dc4f26bad50d6c2591f05b819ed0863e23aa

I had definitely un-muted all channels that could be enabled in the sound mixer, to no effect. Perhaps a channel
was muted despite showing otherwise in gui sound options.

Sound IS now working, after following instructions here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=936124:
adding a line with "options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba" to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base, and then running "sudo /sbin/alsa force-reload"

Thanks for your bug report. However, I noticed this from your log:

Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
  Capabilities: pvolume
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
  Limits: Playback 0 - 255
  Mono:
  Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [-51.00dB]
  Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [-51.00dB]

This means that the PCM channel is muted. The volume of this needs to be increased for playback to work. COuld you please try increasing this? You can do this by double clicking on the volume applet on your panel (this will open the mixer controls).

Thanks

Thanks. I've attached your alsa-info log to this bug report, which is better than hosting it elsewhere and providing a link. Could you please provide the information requested at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingHardwareDetection as separate attachments?

Thanks in advance.

this is not invalid, sound should have worked out of the box, without the user having to modify /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.

marking as confirmed

to sum up, for 8086:284b (Intel 82801H (ICH8 Family) HDA) needs "options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba" in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

No worries Dimitrios. You're correct though, it does look like 8086:284b needs that option in order for sound to work, which makes it a confirmed kernel bug. I just want to get all the other usual information for hardware detection bugs for the kernel team before i triage it.
