Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.24-19-generic

Ubuntu 8.04.1 Hardy Heron
Probably similar to some other bugs already reported after approx 2.6.19-xx computer do not power off after shutting down. The reason for posting a new bug is that after trying every possible fix, found through launchpad or google, the problem is still continuing. Bug fixes tried range from disabling Network Manager (due to error messages shown as part of shutdown) to trying the newer 2.6.27 kernel from Intrepid.
Problem description is that with splash screen on the shutdown continues normally until progress bar is cleared, hard drive turned off en then get stuck. Have to be turned of by holding down power button of the laptop. Text messages show that at the end of shutdown procedure it runs until Power Down message is shown.
One thing that is somewhat different to similar bug reports is that on Hibernate the computer freezes before completing the power off. But every Shutdown after coming out of Hibernate is successful in powering off the machine. I feel as if this should be a strong hint as to the source of the problem but my experience is far to limited to find it.
It should probably be mentioned that due to the fact that this laptop is based heavily on Intel components (Intel motherboard 82801G and graphics controller Intel 945) I had a hard time getting the system up and running initially with Hardy (mostly graphics card related).

Please let me know about any further information I can provide.

Hi afriseun,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 278927

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Sorry for only now coming back to you. Can you please close this bug report if nobody else has information about it. I dropped my NEC laptop and has now moved over to a Toshiba one. On which Karmic sorted basically all the problems I had on the NEC.

Regards,
