Bug Description

After upgrade to 8.10 from 8.04 (update-manager -d), screensaver fails to load if Compiz is running. While in Compiz, Xorg shoots up to 50% CPU usage for about 30 secs every few minutes, before returning to its normal 2-3% consumption. When I load Metacity instead of Compiz, the issues disappear - i.e. Xorg consumption stays low and continuous and gnome-screensaver loads as it should.

Obligatory "me too" post. EzNet's solution worked for me as well - on two machines.
