Bug Description

If I turn up the AC97 volume handle in the ALSA mixer for my SbLive Value card a loud piercing squeal is emitted. I'm not sure what that particular volume knob is supposed to do but I'm sure it's not supposed to do that! Since upgrading to intrepid, my PC emits the same noise for about half a second while the PC boots up. Obviously, that's quite annoying!

I think it's a bug that the volume knob does that and that my PC emits that noise while booting. I'd expect a clearly labeled volume knob that controls the volume of a some channel, and no squeal at boot-up.

ALSA info output at http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=62055bdc2d2a3e7823bee74cb53a3f9fb6b86436

Package is a guess since there's a lot of ALSA packages and it's not obvious which is the culprit.

Mute the AC97 element. Having a confusing array of mixer elements to fiddle with is a known issue. There is no ETA on a viable fix. To compound matters, on different revisions of different AC'97 codecs, the relevant mixer elements affect things differently.

Any idea how to prevent the half-second squeak at boot-up? Obviously I can just ignore the useless volume knob but the squeak at boot is a bit more annoying.

Just a same here. Only I also have choppy unbearable sound. Did you also have choppy sound? If so how did you fix?

Anyway, you'll find that the AC97 problem is linked to the AC97 capture. If you show that device and then mute it (under the recording tab) the ac97 slider will have no spine chilling squeal. As for startup noise, it must have something to do with starting alsa and enabling AC97 capture.

Could this be feedback from an active mic? Try turning off the mic and see if it still happens.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . Thanks in advance.
