Bug Description
If I turn up the AC97 volume handle in the ALSA mixer for my SbLive Value card a loud piercing squeal is emitted. I'm not sure what that particular volume knob is supposed to do but I'm sure it's not supposed to do that! Since upgrading to intrepid, my PC emits the same noise for about half a second while the PC boots up. Obviously, that's quite annoying!
I think it's a bug that the volume knob does that and that my PC emits that noise while booting. I'd expect a clearly labeled volume knob that controls the volume of a some channel, and no squeal at boot-up.

Package is a guess since there's a lot of ALSA packages and it's not obvious which is the culprit.
Mute the AC97 element. Having a confusing array of mixer elements to fiddle with is a known issue. There is no ETA on a viable fix. To compound matters, on different revisions of different AC'97 codecs, the relevant mixer elements affect things differently.
