There was no problem in 8.04 and the problem appears with 8.10.

Running latest 8.10 beta with updates up to Oct 6 and gnome-system-terminal crashes every time I click on File Systems tab as myself, but works if running as root. The problem is exactly the same as this bug report. I've had this problem since alpha 4 release (but it might have been there even before that).

It still works fine with 8.04.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these instuctions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

  • core Edit (17.5 MiB, application/octet-stream)

gnome-system-monitor is not generating a crash report under /var/crash when it crashes.
I am attaching the core dump instead.

Try to obtain a backtrace then, instructions are at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and attach the file to the bug report. This will greatly help us in tracking down your problem.

Am having similar problem in Intrepid Ibex.
System manager crashes with the error:
terminate called after throwing an instance of 'Glib::FileError'
when I click on the 'Processes' tab.
Will run as root (sudo gnome-system-monitor;)
My version of gnome-system-monitor is: 2.24.1-0ubuntu1

I also encounter the problem. Gnome-system-monitor crashes when clicked on the File Systems tab.
I'm attaching the backtrace file.

Why this bug is still incomplete?

I changed it back to new. Maybe I should have done that after I submitted the missing information.

I found an interesting fact about this bug.

I installed ubuntu 8.10 inside windows XP using wubi installer. This crash does not occur in it. The I did a full system update and restarted. I could not reproduce this bug under that installation however.

May be then this is related to ext3 filesystem permissions?

I've installed Intrepid on two machines both from the Live-CD. On one machine I experience the bug, on the other one not.

I have a hint about this issue. gnome-system-monitor is crashing only when opening as user the "Filesystems" tab. Change the following key in gconf and you'll be able to use at least the other tabs: /apps/procman/current_tab. It is set to 3 per default (the "Filesystems" tab). Change it to some value between 0 and 2 to open one of the three other tabs per default and it won't crash any more unless you open the "Filesystems" tab manually.

edit: It seems really to be something related to ext3 because (as I now realize :D ) the crash appears on the machine with an ext3 /home and two other partitions in ext3 whereas on another machine with /home and / in reiserfs and another partition in ntfs it doesn't appear!
