Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.15-52-amd64-server

System: Dapper Drake 6.06.2
Kernel: 2.6.15-52.71-amd64-server
Hardware: HP Proliant ML 350 G5

Since using the 2.6.15-52 Version of the Kernel I get irregular Panics. The Problem must have appeared between release -29 and -52, as I was running -29 for a long time without problems before.

The panic occurs 1 - 2 times a month, one time it occurred even after 2 days of uptime. It also occurs if the system is idle, as it did the last time. The problem is that this system is in full production and due to the panics we even got a database corruption and had to restore from backup. Unfortunately I have read some kernel related bug reports and I must really regret that mostly they are closed after half an year with status "No activity" or with the notice to try the latest beta version of ubuntu. This is really not an option, as the system is in production the problem is real and also after half an year but I need a solution so stick back to 2.6.15-29.

All Firmware Updates are applied, Hardware Diagnostics run with HP's Smart Start CD shows no errors, memtest-2.01 run over 10 hours shows also no errors.

OK, it seems that this bug is related to Samba, uptime is now 43 days. I tracked everything down I've changed and the last thing was a downgrade back to samba-3.0.25b, As far as I remembered the lockups were coming close to when I upgraded samba to 3.0.28a (self compiled). However to be for sure we'll have to wait at least another 47 days. So don't close this bug, because even if samba is guilty for the lockups it's still a kernel bug, because NO userland software should be able to crash the kernel.

Sad enough that even that this is a serious problem no one even cared about it and one is left alone in the dark.

It is not related to samba, as the machine crashed again after 49 days of uptime, with the old installation of packages

Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Dapper reached EOL, please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:

Please upgrade and test, I'll leave the linux task open for that.
