Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm-guest-session

I just experienced a problem with the guest session: After the second time I launched the guest session, I wanted to switch back to my normal user. The guest session disappeared, but the screen stayed black, I could only see my mouse. The password dialogue for my normal user did not appear.
Switching to tty worked kind of, but sometimes I hat to switch forth and back to get a visible tty. Killing X with strg + alt + backspace made x restart (heard the login sound), but still, I only saw my mouse.

I am on Intrepid Beta (amd64) with all updates applied, my graphics driver is the xserver-xorg-video-radeon :6.9.0+git20081003.f9826a56-0ubuntu2, gdm-guest session 0.4.

Right now, after reboot, I cannot reproduce the bug, though I did not change/update anything. Attaching my Xorg logs.

I HAVE also the same problem it is not due to compiz because i have the problem with and without compiz . ihave a black screen and it's freeze . I am obliged to rebbot the system ! . I used the Intrepid IBEX relased version X86

I can confirm this

on my laptop, I can login my normal account, but when I try to use the guest login or the one of a friend of mine I can only see the mouse curser on a black screen.

Im using fglrx instead of the radeon one but I think this doesnt matter for this issue.

greets

well I also solved this, if the session type is that "xclient script" it didnt work, but by selecting GNOME or KDE directly it works very fine !
Maybe that Xclient script thingy is a leftover from earlier versions, so sorry

Oh, I just started a guest session again and the result was a black screen without mouse pointer. Switching to the original X session tty7 and then back to the guest-session on tty9 worked. Attaching a copy of Xorg.0.log.

Snowdays, could you please add the output of 'lspci -vvnn' to see if you have the same hardware?

I also have this problem. I thought I would contribute my 'lspci -vvnn' as well in hopes that it will help.

Why is this marked as incomplete. What additional information can be provided to help solve this?

radeontool in Jaunty* can be used to assist in debugging this issue. After installing it, you run it like this:

    radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_good.txt
    radeontool regmatch '*' > regdump_broke.txt

Run it two times. Once when you have a working screen (for any driver), and once in the broken case (either from the tty console or logged into the sick box remotely). Attach both of those to this bug report, and we can then forward this issue upstream. Thanks ahead of time!

[* Note: radeontool is available in earlier versions of Ubuntu but is too old; if you need to run it on an older version of Ubuntu, you can obtain and build it from the upstream git tree at http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~airlied/radeontool/]

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
