Bug Description

I've been pursuing the cause of these freezes for a long time. First I was told it could be a screen-saver thing... so, I turned it off. Then I was told it could be a problem with the graphic card but it can't, since I'm successfully runing the latest manufacturer driver available (nvidia, by the way). Then we moved to a compiz problem, but I had disabled all desktop effects and it was still happening. After a while, somebody told me to check the system registers and I was able to found a NetworkManager problem. It seemed very strange because, it didn't matter if my wireless or ethernet were on or off. But the solution was to upgrade my "stable" Hardy version and test the new Intrepid Ibex. My Hardy didn't seem that stable so I figured, why not? My wireless connection has been rock-solid since the update, but my freezes continue. It doesn't matter what's the kernel version I use (at Hardy ones). Don't get me wrong, I already posted this on UF but nobody had a clue about it or cared to get into this issue. So, if somebody on the development team wants to do more testing on my machine in order to solved it, I'm available to cooperate. If not, I'll have to pursue a more drastic solution despite my fascination for Ubuntu.
By the way, keep in mind that my computer freezed 15 times and a reebot to write this message, making one hour and a half to write it.

Best wishes,
Lucho

I've got a little update on this situation. After a sudden act of despair, I was able to find the causes for this "mysterious" freezes. The up to date nvidia hardware controllers were indeed the cause of this problem. As a last resort, I uninstalled them and the freezes and display distortions were no longer a problem. The downside is that any 3D game and some rendering tools are out of the horizon and even some 2D applications are now slower... but most applications are handled quite nicely. This seems to be a problem for a long time. I was able to find some registers dated of 2006 and not even the new 177 drivers have fixed this issue.
As I said before, if somebody needs to test something, as always I'm available to help on this.

Hi Glucklich,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 278333

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
