Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager-gnome

Just upgraded to intrepid beta. Before the upgrade I had a working nm-applet, connected to wifi. During the upgrade I experienced bug 126987. After a reboot, the nm-applet did not start automatically, leaving me with no network connection.

Workaround:

Run nm-applet manually from the run dialog (Alt-F2 in Gnome).

After starting manually and then rebooting I do get the applet but a non-technical user would just see that it's broken after upgrade.

I had a similar problem too.

In Hardy, I disabled nm-applet since I did not need it. Now, after the upgrade, I tried to start it to see the new work.

I've put it into Sessions, but at login it did't appear. Launching it from terminal, I get the following error:

ste@ste-ubuntu:~$ nm-applet
/usr/share/themes/Human/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:273: Unable to locate image file in pixmap_path: "panel_bg.png"

** (nm-applet:14296): WARNING **: <WARN> applet_dbus_manager_start_service(): Could not acquire the NetworkManagerUserSettings service as it is already taken. Return: 3

ste@ste-ubuntu:~$ lsb_release -rd

ste@ste-ubuntu:~$ dpkg -S $(which nm-applet)
network-manager-gnome: /usr/bin/nm-applet
ste@ste-ubuntu:~$ apt-cache policy network-manager-gnome

Hi,
         I have solved my issue.

In fact it was not a NM problem at all. NM applet did not appear since my wireless connection was statically configured into /etc/network/interfaces. This was due to the fact that I disabled DHCP of my router some years ago.

Now I've a more straightforward setup, with no more entries into interfaces file and all is configured through NM and working PERFECTLY.

All I have to say is thanks to Alex and GNOME devs for his great work on that component of Ubuntu, which is actually a BIG step forward for the general user experience.

Now I really feel that 'it just works', no more tweaking to get wireless working!
