Bug Description

I use Ubuntu 8.04.1, use Compiz, Intel945 video card, HP nx7400 Notebook

When some application starts using video overlay the system hungs up completely (only mouse pointer is still alive).

Tested with VLC media player, Mplayer, system hungs up when starting a movie,
after switching output module to X11 which is unaccelerated and do not use overlay everything works fine and never hungs up.

Totem hungs up as well but it doesn't have any option to change output module.

Tested also in skype and cheese with video camera, both hungs up the the system when
starting video in skype or running the cheese.

This bug apperars in about 1 per 3 sessions.

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue.
If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please
attach that as well.

I tried to reproduce the problem on a borrowed nx7400 with the Hardy 8.04.1 Live CD, but I couldn't using the following procedure:

- System -> Preferences -> Appearance -> Visual Effects to "Extra"
- Open the video file "Experience ubuntu.ogg" which is in the "Examples" folder on the Desktop (using Totem)
- Log out and in again 7-8 times and open the file again.

To reproduce it do I need to (a) reboot the computer in between the sessions (takes forever with a LiveCD), (b) enable more compiz stuff, (c) open another file or (d) apt-get install some other players?

Yes you need turn off your computer, and turn on and load system again. Just reboot is not enough i guess.

Additional info. Laptop is not fully hung up. Sound of moovie is still running. Keyboard doesn't respond. Mouse pointer works but is useless, clicking doesn't work.

If it is necessary to change the configuration and then turn off an on the computer, it is not possible to reproduce it with a Live CD. It is not an option to install ubuntu on the nx7400 since it is not mine.

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
     https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
     See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:
