Bug Description

Ubuntu 8.10 (beta): the keyboard on the Vostro seems not to be identified correctly.
I can't type but symbols (such as the "at" symbol).
I tried switching to a different keyboard through system ->settings but only the message (attached) popped up.

Hi a-gentemann,

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

Hi,

I just reinstalled Ubuntu and found that it worked before I copied my
home folder back.
After I did, it stopped working again.
So it must have had something to do with changes in the xorg.conf file
that were not compatible with the new version.
I got rid of all the settings concerning the desktop and now it is working.
Thus, it is probably not a bug but a setting.

Thanks for the help anyway!

As a note for the future, it would be nice to have some kind of tool
that selectively can reset parts of the settings. E.g., you overwrite
all setttings in the home directory concerning compiz changes that might
screw up the system or the like....
