Keep getting error 'Error activating XKB configuration.' after login in gnome

Bug Description
Everytime I log in I get an error window containing this message:
'Error activating XKB configuration.
It can happen under various circumstances:
- a bug in libxklavier library
- a bug in X server (xkbcomp, xmodmap utilities)
- X server with incompatible libxkbfile implementation

I am using Ubuntu 8.10 Beta.
I have encountered the problem updating Intrepid beta from the head of Hardy, initially installed as Gutsy.
