Bug Description

The graphics chip is Intel 845G, memtest86+ did not find any errors

Cannot start a Gnome session in beta intrepid ibex, always get a black screen and keyboard is locked
Arrives at gdm login screen, then after logging in hears login sound and can move the mouse, but keyboard not responsive and sees only a black screen (+ mouse pointer)

It works fine with intrepid alpha 5, but not with any of the betas, or the RC.

removing compiz (by booting into a terminal) fixes the problem

ok, manzur, here's what you should do:
start ubuntu without the splash screen and tell us if you see any error messages.

the way to start without splash is -at the grub menu- press "e", then go to the line starting with "kernel" and press "e" again. go to the end of this line, and remove the words "quiet" and "splash"

I have the exact same problem on a fuijitsu-siemens amilo laptop. Graphics is integrated intel 82845G/GL. I had hardy on it, then it worked most of the time with nosplash boot option. I tried intrepid live-cd alpha 5 and with that it worked fine. Did never try the beta live cd. Now I network upgraded to intrepid RC, and I cannot log in anymore. GDM starts fine, but the login hangs with a brown-orange background and a moving mouse cursor (arrow, not big X). Nothing else works. No ctrl-alt-F1, no sysreq-reisub, nothing. Only power off. Then I downloaded intrepid RC live cd, and booting from that is exactly the same, hangs on login. I can boot to the root terminal in recovery mode, but that's about it. I can try to get some info out of some logs later if that would help.

I have the same problem. I upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid RC. Login window appears; but after entering user ID and password, the screen goes blank. I read in Ubuntu Forums that removing compiz and compiz-core will fix this problem which is what I did by entering the system in Terminal mode. I installed all updates ever since. If I install compiz and compiz-core now, the system behaves in the exact same way it did a few days go (screen goes blank after entering user ID and password). So, this issue is not yet addressed in Intrepid final release. I can use my computer now without any Visual Effects. I hope this is not the case forever.

I'm experiencing the same problem with, IIRC, the same video chip (Intel 82845G/GL) in a Thinkpad T60.

I network upgraded to Intrepid (from Hardy) last night / this morning and upon reboot I can no longer login with gdm. I enter my user/pass and X starts for just a brief second (black screen, but the cursor changes from the gdm cursor to the default "X") before (presumably) dying. I end up back at gdm (where it prompts for my username).

If I try to switch to a different VT, the display seems to get corrupted and I can't see any text. After a few attempts of this, the machine will sometimes lock up.

Everything worked just fine on Hardy.

I have not had time to fully diagnose it yet on my side (too busy today), but I'll try to post more details later.

Kavee-- Sorry if I was unclear. I *can* get to the gdm login screen and enter my username and password. GDM accepts them, and X seems to start but then it immediately dies (causing gdm to start up again).

I should clarify, I can get to GDM Login Screen at any time. It is when logging into gnome session that I have the problem indicated previously (mouse moves, hear logon sound, black screen).

I was able to install icewm and use it without issue, that is how I found the workaround. I implemented the indicated workaround and it does work.

Removing compiz does indeed stop X from crashing. I think the priority of this bug should be upped removing compiz is really a temporary patch to the problem than a solution.

Personal opinion, having been pagued by this problem since August 13:
1. Compiz developers being so fascinated by new "eye candy" tricks on high end hardware they forgot about the base of people out there running on Intel (heard of them?) hardware & drivers.
2. Deciding to abandon the 8.04 compiz code for the (vast number) of users that 8.10 fails on.
3. Decision to make compiz default forgetting about the base of people out there ....

My opinion, since I don't count, just an "ordinary user" testing fragile early builds:
If existing 8.04 package runs on the configuration, new 8.10 doesn't, have install put the right package on.
