Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Openoffice.org Writer crashes if you press ESC when modifying a style. This is easy to reproduce:
1) Open any text document
2) Open the Styles and Formatting window
3) Right click a paragraph style and select Modify.
4) A new window is opened. Note, however, that the Styles and Formatting window is still in focus!
5) Press ESC. The crash occurs.

If you click on the "edit style" window and then press ESC, the program will behave normally (the window will close and no crash will occur).

This is somewhat similar to bug #131216 but not exactly.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 and Openoffice 2.4.1.

This bug still occurs for me and it occurs EVERY TIME. You said I should reopen it if I could provide the information you have requested. You have not requested any information, you have just dismissed the bug because you cannot replicate it. Are you sure you are using the same build and version as I? What information can I provide that can help you with this bug?

When I created the bug, I used Ubuntu 8.04, now I've upgraded to 8.10 and the bug is still present.

Can you attach a document that exhibits this problem? I can't reproduce it with test documents I create, but maybe I am doing something wrong?

Thanks,

Also does this happen under Gnome or some other desktop/window manager?

Also does installing the 'openoffice.org' meta package help resolve the crash? I couldn't make it happen even when enabling compiz so I am at a loss on how to reproduce this bug. Also no one else has reported since bug since long ago (with 2.3.0) so I think it may have something to do specifically with your system in some way.

I mostly use Gnome with Metacity.
For me it occurs in ALL documents, even the default blank page. What might affect this is that I have the Styles and Formatting box floating and not attached to the main Openoffice window.
Also, I think I understand why the crash occurs. It's because the Styles and Formatting window retains focus, even after opening the Paragraph style window, so that window is grayed out. If I press ESC then, I actually close the Styles and Formatting window. Then, if I close the Paragraph style window, the program tries to focus the Styles and Formatting window, which by then is already closed.
However, if I press Cancel or click on the Paragraph style window and then press ESC to close that window, the crash doesn't occur.

I think this is as much info I can give you. If noone else have this problem, I guess it's not necessary to bother investigating it further. If you feel you need to close this bug now, I won't hassle you anymore.

Do you still have this problem with the new version of OOo in the ppa at https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive ?

I am unable to reproduce this at all on Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) with openoffice.org 1:3.0.1-9ubuntu3. If someone can give more accurate detailed instructions on how to consistently reproduce this problem then I will have something to report to the developers. Otherwise there is nothing really that I can do.

Chris

I thought this bug was gone but now I actually discovered how to reproduce it again. I've also attached some screenshots in an archive. Follow these steps:

1. Open OO.org Writer with a blank document.
2. Make sure the Styles and Formatting window is visible (press F11 to open it).
3. Make sure the Styles and Formatting window is NOT attached to the main Writer window. If it is attached to the main Writer window, deattach it by clicking on it and dragging it out onto the screen so that it gets another window.
4. Right-click on any style, click Modify so that the "edit style" window appears.
5. Now, and this is important: click on the Styles and Formatting window again and bring it out in front of the "edit style" window. Make sure it's active (i.e. the window title text should be highlighted).
6. Press ESC to close the Styles and Formatting window.
7. Close the "edit style" window by pressing ESC or clicking Cancel. The crash occurs!

This is the Ubuntu version and the second OO.org version I've seen this error on. One improvement is that in OO.org 2, the "edit style" window actually always showed up BEHIND the Styles and Formatting window, making this bug occur quite often. In OO.org 3, it seems the "edit style" window shows up the way it should, the crash occur more rarely and the bug less irritating.

This appears to be fixed in OOo 3.1.0 which is currently still not released but will be in Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).
