Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

With previous versions of Ubuntu, I used the following directions which have always worked with setting up my Lexmark x1240 printer:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=49714

On this fresh install of Kubuntu Intrepid, these instructions have stopped working for the first time. (I went through them three times to make sure I didn't mess anything up). When I go to print, nothing happens. When I go into the printer configuration after trying to print, I get the following error message:

/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertoz600 failed

To make sure the connection was in order, I printed from my Windows partition, and it worked. Something specific to Intrepid is preventing me from being able to print on my printer.

Please let me know which logs are necessary, if any. Thank you!

Ubuntu cannot support this printer because the printer manufacturer does not provide a Linux driver for your specific printer model, therefore we are closing this bug as won't fix while actually it is something Ubuntu can't fix. Please ask your printer manufacturer for a Linux driver!
Furthermore if you want your printer driver to be installed automatically in future versions of Ubuntu you should also ask the manufacturer to provide a distribution independent driver package as described here: http://www.linux-foundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/WritingAndPackagingPrinterDrivers, so we can implement this specification: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/printerdriverautodownload in future versions of Ubuntu that will automatically install your printer driver.

Unacceptable. I already know that it's up to Lexmark to provide a
driver, and that is NOT what this bug is about.

With previous versions of Ubuntu this printer worked following a howto.
Now, it doesn't. Whether the printer is supported or not, there is no
excuse for a regression. Ever.

It worked fine before following the howto so whatever prevents the howto
from working should be checked. This bug is probably something
completely unrelated to Lexmark that prevents it from working. This is
an Ubuntu specific problem.

If you are so convinced that this is a regression compared to previous version of Ubuntu it would help if you could provide some more information as described here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems, especially your cups error_log and /var/log/syslog file after trying to print something.

Here is the first file.

And the second.

When I tried to print, it worked this time. I don't have any clue why, I didn't change anything except for enabling the debug in cups. I attached the files anyway.

Lexmark released a driver for the Z600 series, which is the one that makes my printer work. So the driver is a Linux driver, but it makes no sense why enabling debug in cups would fix everything.

Anything in /var/log/syslog after disabling debugging in cups and trying to print again?

Here is the most recent lines in the syslog (it's huge so I trimmed it to keep the size down).

I forgot to mention that I disabled debugging, then printed, and then captured the most recent lines of the syslog.
