Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

With metacity I can move windows beyond the upper limit by pressing Alt while dragging a window. This is very convenient on my rather small screen. Compiz doesn't allow me to do that, instead, it stops moving the window when reaching the upper border.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 8.10
Package: compiz 1:0.7.7+git20080807-0ubuntu10
PackageArchitecture: all
SourcePackage: compiz
Uname: Linux 2.6.27-4-generic x86_64

Yep, that does it for me. Thank you very much.
I consider it a bug, that it doesn't do it by default, though.
Maybe it's just a GConf key one could set in the Schema.

Cheers,

it is in /apps/compiz/plugins/move/allscreens/options/constrain_
y - set to 0 to allow free moving of the windows. This is a serious issue considering the popularity of netbooks (like the eeepc from which I am typing this) an the regression in compiz as compared to metacity in the default setup. I personally do not see any downsides in changing this setting.

Resetting the status change, as this has already been identified as a bug. Also I didn't understand why it has been set to Invalid. Commenting on that would help me to understand that.

Changed in compiz:
status: Invalid → Confirmed

Ok, this is a wishlist, so it needs to be marked as that.

I would not call this purely a wishlist as it makes many dialogues including many from the installer unusable at lower screen resolutions. If you try using Ubuntu at 1024x600 or lower (it is apparent on the eeepc 1000h which has the largest screens of the netbook category of devices), many high profile programs and other windows are not usable without changing this setting - a situation which is not acceptable and should be considered as a bug as it directly impedes people from using the software in a standard and necessary manor. Such a key UI/behaviour bug which prevents the use of software on an increasing popular range of devices is just as important as a more obvious bug, especially when it only needs the change of one gconf key to fix it and make sure that compiz does this as well as metacity (where this behaviour has already been used as long as I can remember, so it is very unlikely it would break anything) in managing this.

Right, I am just bumping this bug in the hope someone wants to look into it. It just requires one changes in the default gconf schema, the behaviour is tried and tested in metacity and it would bring a huge improvement for netbooks.
