Bug Description

Binary package hint: finch

I installed finch on jeos <http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whatisubuntu/serveredition/jeos>. When trying to run it, the following message corrupts its display:

process 30393: D-Bus library appears to be incorrectly set up; failed to read machine uuid: Failed to open "/var/lib/dbus/machine-id": No such file or directory
See the manual page for dbus-uuidgen to correct this issue.

The following message then appears every few seconds:

libnm_glib_dbus_init: error, org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.FileNotFound raised:
Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file or directory

All of the above messages appear on stderr so they can be silenced with finch 2>/dev/null

Installing the dbus package reduces the problem to single message on startup that does not corrupt its display:

libnm_glib_nm_state_cb: dbus returned an error.
(org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown) The name org.freedesktop.NetworkManager was not provided by any .service files

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.

I set up an 8.10 JeOS VM and went straight to apt-get install finch. The list of dependencies is now, to put it mildly, friggin HUGE... but dbus is in there.

I'd say this is fixed, though I have not actually tried installing it.

Since I've not got anything better to do this morning, I went ahead and did confirm that with all the new dependencies finch pulls in, the problem reported here is no longer an issue in 8.10 JeOS.
