Bug Description

Package: 3.0.3+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1

This is pretty low priority but thought I would report the incident. I was prompted by update manager to update Firefox yesterday. While updating, Firefox started coming up with error messages and was rendered unusable, when I rebooted and used the newly installed Firefox, the first page I am directed to is http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/3.0.3/whatsnew/

This page says that I am beta testing Firefox. Will the entire Ubuntu community be part of the Mozilla Beta Tester group and will be using a beta release of Firefox? (again?) Or perhaps I don't understand something here.

What was expected:
1) Firefox should not act differently if being used while updating (making the browser unusable).
2) Not to be brought to a page that says "Thanks for helping us beta test Firefox 3.0.3" (stable releases - ff is everyday software)

For #1, Firefox does require you to restart the browser after it has been upgraded. You should see a prompt from the Update Manager warning that you must restart Firefox after the new version is installed. If you didn't see that prompt, I suggest you file a separate bug for that issue.

For #2, Firefox 3.0.3 is final, stable software. It was released on September 26, 2008 - the day you opened this issue. I suspect that Mozilla had the "testing" language still up on that page when you got the new version, and they've since changed the page (if you look now, the page doesn't say anything about testing). So this issue was merely a lag on the part of Mozilla in updating their 3.0.3 "weclome" page.

#1 I will try to reproduce this. Even thought it should ask you to restart, I don't think it should mess up your current session, making the browser unusable, causing the user to close the application due to a cryptic error.

#2 is a superficial error not an bug/issue. You are correct to say it's just Mozilla's "welcome page". This page has been changed since the bug was reported. Sorry about the confusion.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.
