intrepid ibex - xorg fails to load: (EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1)

I tried to upgrade from Hardy to intrepid ibex and xorg fails to load. A gui pops up showing the error message "(EE) module ABI major version (0) doesn't match the server's version (1) (EE) Failed to load module "dri" (module requirement mismatch, 0)" and offers to reconfigure xorg but is not able to do so.

Manually changing the Driver in xorg.conf from "fglrx" to "radeon" (which xorg.99.log confirms loads ok) does not appear to stick - it is is changing back to fglrx on reboot.

Error message from:

Replace /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so with NEW one from Xorg !!!
