Bug Description

After updating Intrepid, the support for my wired intel network card disappeared.
lspci gives me the following:
00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82566MM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03)

I read the mail this morning about the Intel GigE network card problems. But this is not one of those right?

I am however suspecting that the driver for my network card was disabled at the same time as the GigE

Issue the following command to determine the version of the installed network adapter driver:
- ethtool -i <ethx>
<ethx> is the name of the ethernet device to query.
Use ifconfig to determine the device name

Hi Pascal,

I assume you're running the latest 2.6.27-4.6 kernel in which the e1000e driver was purposely removed due to bug 263555 . It's more of a precautionary measure. Here's the excerpt from the changelog:

"2.6.27-4.6

linux (2.6.27-4.6) intrepid; urgency=low

So this really isn't a bug per se but a temporary disablement until the real issue is solved. I suggest you subscribe to bug 263555 so that you are notified of any updates. Thanks.

pascal@pascal-t61:~$ ethtool -i eth0
driver: e1000
version: 7.3.20-k2-NAPI
firmware-version: 0.3-0
bus-info: 0000:00:19.0

* Performed on Hardy since there is no eth0 interface right now in Intrepid

So I was using that driver.. suppose I was lucky not to become f*cked up :-)

Thanks

I installed the Intrepid beta from Install CD because upgrade from Hardy->Intrepid failed on the nVidia driver - there was absolutely no way to get X up again (even the nVidia site drivers did not work because Ubuntu screws up the nVidia kernel modules so that the nVidia installer's compiled kernel module does not ever get loaded). Well, I then installed the Intrepid on CD. Now I have picture on X, but I no longer have ethernet.

Eth0 not working on Intrepid is quite serious regression compared to Hardy and it blocks me using the Intrepid beta. And if this disablement is discontinued, I have no means to get the driver there, wlan does not keep up (it disconnects all the time, by the way, the same access point works perfectly on Mac and Nokia N810 Internet tablet), so I don't have any kind of network to do dist-upgrade. Have to install Hardy back from CD because of that. Oh, crap.
