Thanks for your report. user-mode-linux does not exist, it's kernel-patch-uml and uml-utilities.

Do you happen to know which package refers to it?

user-mode-linux is available in debian, its a pre-compiled uml kernel, not sure why we don't have it, altho i think its a little out of date at any rate.

We also have the user-mode-linux-doc package

lathiat@qaplaH:/var/lib/apt/lists$ apt-cache show uml-utilities
Package: uml-utilities
Priority: extra
Section: universe/otherosfs
Installed-Size: 260
Maintainer: Matt Zimmerman <email address hidden>

From this FAQ: http://www.user-mode-linux.org/~blaisorblade/faq.html

we see:

=======
 Is UML merged in 2.6.9?

 Yes, it is. The merge happened before 2.6.9-rc2.

 The UML patches distributed on the official site by Jeff Dike contain, in this case, just experimental features or new patches not yet merged in the vanilla kernel (at least for now). For instance, the hostfs rewrite is currently not merged in mainline.

=======

Is this package missing because the kernel already has it merged? (Just a guess)

Looking at debian's user-mode-linux in unstable, it seems to provide /usr/bin/linux.uml. I think this is used to start the user-mode-linux system. According to the Debian package's page: "This package contains the kernel itself, as an executable program, and the associated kernel modules."

Matt, currently we do not provide user-mode-linux in ubuntu, and alot of application that depend on it setting up uml fail with unmet dependencies. As I see it, we either take the UML packages from debian or else we'd need to come up with another solution to have UML automatically installed, for use by packages such as guml. (stuff like guml will just seize to be useful since a user installing them through synaptic for example, would have to know to create a patched kernel with the patches in)

Thoughts?

Sorry for creating noise, this seems to have been already discussed with BenC by Soren Hansen that was told to write a spec about it:

The user-mode-linux package in Debian does not build on Ubuntu since we carry a lot of extra weight in our kernel packages.

I've created a spec for UML's inclusion in Ubuntu Edgy+1:
