Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 and Totem-plugin-viewer 2.22.1.
It should not show visual effects because they are disabled in Totem settings. It works as it should in the movie player, but not in the browser plugin.

I can confirm it. Using 8.04 (upgraded from 8.04) and totem-xine. Although, I think this happens in earlier versions of Ubuntu. I would like to give some details of what I have found:

The Totem mozilla plugin does not honour the gconf keys that control the usage of the visual effects when playing audio streams. When you disable the visuals from Totem then the /schemas/apps/totem/show_vfx key becomes false. But if you go and play an audio stream within the browser, then the totem mozilla plugin still uses the effects.

Obviously, it does not check the /schemas/apps/totem/visual key either, in order to decide which visual to use.

I have found that the plugin checks the ~/.config/totem/xine_config file instead. There are the following lines inside this file:

# frames per second to generate
# numeric, default: 14
effects.goom.fps:15

# goom image height
# numeric, default: 240
#effects.goom.height:240

# goom image width
# numeric, default: 320
#effects.goom.width:320

# colour space conversion method
# { Fast but not photorealistic Slow but looks better }, default: 0
#effects.goom.csc_method:Fast but not photorealistic

The strange thing it that Totem also uses this line to remember the size of the visualizations (but not the type). If in Totem the type of the visualizations for example is changed to oscope, i.e. /schemas/apps/totem/visual is oscope, the lines in ~/.config/totem/xine_config don't change, they stay the same, e.g. #effects.goom.width:320, etc.

Thus, I assume a solution would be to make the above lines obsolete and create a new gconf key for the size of the visual effects that both Totem and the Totem Mozilla plugin will honor. Also, the plugin obviously should be made to honor the /schemas/apps/totem/show_vfx gconf key that sets the visual effects on/off.

Ah! a typo there. I meant I upgraded from 7.04. :)

Yes and forgot to say that the plugin must be also able to read the /schemas/apps/totem/visual key.

The screenshot doesn't show visual effects, even they are there.

I have created an example. Start totem, go to its preferences and disable the visual effects. Then go to this page:
http://geocities.com/kostas291/totem_plugin_example.html
the effects continue to work in the plugin.

The effects is always the goom, since the plugin checks the ~/.config/totem/xine_config and not the appropriate gconf key.

(sorry for the choice of geocities and for the HI theme :) )

The problem described in the title was definitely _not_ fixed.
Totem plugin shows visual effects even disabled
with gconf-editor or the standalone totem program's configuration dialog
(same effect: only the standalone totem honors /apps/totem/show_vfx = false)
I'm using Ubuntu 10.4.

I think this bug should be reopened.
I'm not sure what are the correct procedures, please advise.

I agree with Alexandru. I have visual effects disabled in Totem, but they still appear when using Totem's browser plugin in Firefox.

I do not understand why gnome-bugs #542491 is marked as fixed. They "fixed" the bug by having the plugin disable visual effects if the widget size is under 150 pixels. It is sensible to disable visual effects for a widget under 150 pixels, but it does not fix the bug when there still is no option to disable visual effects at will.

I think this bug should be reopened. Here, as well as in gnome-bugs.

Workaround is to right click and select "open in movieplayer". Alternatively, if the totem plugin is playing "full-screen" in the browser, then you can resize the browser to under 150 pixels tall, the width seems to have no effect.

I agree. This is not fixed. In 11.10, I still see the visualization in Firefox even when it is disabled in totem. Re-sizing the window to be small does not matter either.
It is wasting almost 50% of my CPU!
