Bug Description

Hi,

I found out that the beep command doesn't reproduce any sound anymore (used to
work with breezy).
I can assure that volume is ok since I can hear the beep which gnome-terminal
sometimes generates.

Using dapper drake

I can confirm this; since 25th of februari 2006 (IIRC) my PC speaker doesn't make a sound anymore inside Linux. I used it for chat notifications in gaim and xchat, so this is pretty frustrating...

I find that beep support comes and goes in ubuntu. Right now, my breezy machine (2.6.12-10-386) does not beep, even though the pcspkr module exists and loads without error. My dapper machine currently can beep under 2.6.15-20-386, but it didn't under the previous two or three kernels (e.g. config-2.6.15-19-386 definitely did not beep).

I wonder if there could be a timing problem with when pcspkr gets loaded? I tried rmmod/modprobe on breezy, and it unloaded and reloaded correctly but it still didn't beep. Does pcspkr really need to be a module?

Sounds from the sound card works reliably on both machines; it's just the pc speaker that doesn't work. I agree that it's sometimes frustrating not to have it, (especially since there's some weirdness I haven't figured out that prevents xchat notifications via /usr/bin/play from working on ubuntu even though play works fine from the cmdline). I've never had problems beeping on either machine under other distros or with self-compiled (non-modular) kernel.org kernels.

Guys, do you still have the problem? Please state the version of Ubuntu you use. Thank you.

I'm having a similar problem. Ever since upgrading to Ubuntu 7.04, beep doesn't seem to work. In fact it's actually the PC-Speaker that fails to produce any sound. Beep, ^G , printf "\a" ..nothing works.

I've checked gnome volume control, sound preferences, as well as modprobed pcspkr but to no avail. I never had this problem while using windows xp on the same machine.
