Bug Description

Binary package hint: module-init-tools

I'm using intrepid on a sony vaio vgn-fz21e, the sound card ich8 from intel is not configured correctly by modprobe.d/alsa-base, so microphone and headset are not reconized. The work around is to add following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base :
options snd-hda-intel model=vaio position_fix=0

Then everything works well. Same issue and workaround in hardy. I think it could be fixed to work directly, since the option needed is depedent on the card subsystem, that appear in lspci or /proc/asound/....

$ uname -a
Linux briza 2.6.27-3-generic #1 SMP Wed Sep 10 16:18:52 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This sounds like a kernel not getting the local quirks right issue.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

Just to begin, I would say that adding

options snd-hda-intel model=auto

in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf as *default* when detecting an Intel sound card is the best way to start.
