I have this same problem. Firefox and Xorg start to thrash when I hit some web pages. This same behaviour also occurs in Galeon, but not in Opera or Konqueror.

Software:
Ubuntu 8.10
Kernel: 2.6.27-7-generic
Gnome 2.24.1
firefox 3.0.4
galeon 2.0.6

Hardware:
Intel Core 2 Duo
4GB DDR2 memory

Add-ins, Plug-ins:
noscript 1.8.6
ubuntu firefox modifications 0.6
demo print plugin
divx web player
quicktime 7.2.0 (totem 2.24.3 plugin)
shockwave flash 9.0 r999
shockwave flash 9.0r124
Totem web browser 2.24.3
windows media player plugin 10 (totem 2.24.3 plugin)

I'm having problems on some pages, but not all. It is especially bad when I load a page that has flash or other video. I don't even have to play the video, just accessing the page will cause xorg and firefox to consume at least one full core of cpu time.
leaving the page(s) or closing them doesn't always clear the cpu overload. Sometimes I have to kill firefox externally.
one example page is www.dailykos.com.

This same behaviour also occurs with galeon , but not with Opera.

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest firefox version? Thanks in advance.

I have this same problem. I am running Firefox 3.05 on Ubuntu 8.10. If I disable the Shockwave Flash 10.0.r15 plugin the CPU % drops.

same bug in both:
firefox 3.0.7
galeon 2.0.6

both using:
Shockwave Flash 10.0 r22

Ubuntu 8.10 and brand new install (with all updates to today: 29-Mar-2009)

for me, Xorg doesn't thrash - just galeon and firefox. It does it when I open up a heap of tabs... but no more than I used to open up on my previous desktop, only now it slows to a crawl, and top gives it 97%-105% CPU usage (and OOC how exactly do you get more than 100% CPU usage???)
