Discovered in version: (0.15-1ubuntu5)

Binary package hint: desktop-file-utils

I can click on Computer and drive shortcuts in Nautilus but any directory shortcut doesn't work. I get this error when clicking the Desktop shortcut:

Could not open location 'file:///home/user/Desktop'
No application is registered as handling this file.

Now after googling I try this:

sudo update-desktop-database
sudo update-mime-database
killall nautilus

This does not help.

sudo update-desktop-database -v shows the following:

A debian bug at one point said this was an issue with desktop-file-utils. I have tried with a clean user account and I have the same issue. This machine was upgraded from Hardy.

thank you for your bug report, that seems to be an issue is your installation and not a bug though, changing the bug report to an user question rather

Hi, i'm converting this back to a bug because i was hit several weeks ago just after upgrade from HARDY to iNTREPID ALPHA.

I've check bug #59392 but i'm not having segfaults.

with sudo update-desktop-database -v i've got a lot of lacks MimeType key

i'm attaching the output from the previous command.

reinstalling ubuntu-desktop didn't helped.

if i run nautilus file:///home/andres/Desktop from a terminal it would work OK.

The problem persists after today 91008 upgrades.

could you describe what you are doing exactly and what error you get?

don't specify the version you are using in the title, that's creating confusing and giving extra work to triager

ok i'll take that into account

After an upgrade to intrepid alpha when i go to Places menu and clic on Desktop or Home or any of the bookmarks in there the error message is displayed.

The problem still persists

i'm not pretty sure if the culprit is the desktop-file-utils package... the bug report was already linked to it.

i've just upgraded again and the error persists...

how can i debug it better?

I experience exactly the same problem. I upgraded from Hardy to Intrepid beta and have this issue too. Any help appreciated, I don't want to reinstall the whole system (though this seems to help when believing similar reports over the internet). Some encountered reinstalling "ubuntu-desktop" would help, this worked not for me. I am running a very "old" ubuntu and every upgrade worked just smooth, so I guess you all know that I don't want to break the cycle now ;-)

i'm marking this as confirmed thks to Stefan.

I'm not pretty sure if the problem lies in there, but you can try reinstalling desktop-file-utils from hardy, the package can be grabbed from this url:

http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy-updates/i386/desktop-file-utils/download

After that try

sudo update-desktop-database
sudo update-mime-database

and restart your session.

and let us know if that worked

thks

just tried the same and it didn't worked.

however i've tried with the new GUEST account and the problem is NOT there!!!.

so this must be some configuration change or something like that as the guest configuration is totally new...

I created a new user account to see if the problem remains there, and after login I noticed that there are no issues at all - so I guess you're absolutely right. To evaluate, I did a gnome specific reset by opening the terminal and entering the following command:

rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity

after this, gnome is forced start the session with the defaults (which in fact should work then). Surprisingly this didn't change anything at all. The problem is still the same.

As a workaround, I now created a new user account and moved my data over. This solved the problem for me, but did not evaluate where the source of the issue itself lies. After deleting my old account, I thought that perhaps it's a Nautilus problem and a

rm rf .nautilus

would help, but I am not able to try out, since my old account is now history ;-)

It seems the problem lies in this file:

cat .local/share/applications/mimeapps.list

[Added Associations]
application/x-bittorrent=transmission.desktop;gnome-btdownload.desktop;
audio/mpeg=gedit-usercustom-3.desktop;
application/x-executable=wine.desktop;
application/x-extension-cfg=gedit-usercustom-3.desktop;

[Removed Associations]
inode/directory=userapp-nautilus-1IAMJU.desktop;

don't know why the inode/directory association is disabled. This was done by the upgrading process somehow.

This can be solved by following the suggestion on this thread

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=944225&highlight=nautilus

Also this seems to be related to bug #260492

the upgrade doesn't change the user configuration, the configuration was likely there on hardy but used differently

so i'll mark this as invalid, because it's a local change. If i somehow manage to find how the upgrade did this or which package misread the settings i'll reopen it again.

Thanks a lot!
