In Ubuntu 8.04.1 it opens directly with gedit not Firefox.

Can you please tell me what version of Ubuntu you are seeing this.

using an another user account to see if the bug is due to some user configuration

Of course it is due user profile. This appeared after I choose 'open with other application' and selected Epiphany for one file. After that all text files are opened in Epiphany by default.

do you really expect bug triagers to know that you did that if you don't write it in the bug description? to send to bugzilla.gnome.org that's an upstream issue
