Bug Description

Binary package hint: devede

In devede (3.6-0.0ubuntu1 in hardy heron x86-64):
- I select a vob file
- in advanced options I select "this is already an mpeg dvd compliant file" option (my disto is in italian language so I have to translate to you everything ....I hope I'll do this work well)
- in the "action" I select to make an iso image ready to burn
- I press "next" button
- I select the folder where DeVeDe will make the DVD image (I leave the default)
- I press OK
- DeVeDe return the error "not possible to make DVD. Maybe you haven't sufficient space in your disk"

But I have sufficient space as vob is only 20MB and my df looks:
marco@dominus:~$ df
File system blocchi di 1K Usati Disponib. Uso% Montato su
/dev/sda1 14878344 849260 13279252 7% /

gvfs-fuse-daemon 14878344 849260 13279252 7% /home/marco/.gvfs

If I select in the "action" to only concert the movies in MPEG standard the process runs ok.

This issue happens with every vob file with every dimension when you select the option "this is already an mpeg dvd compliant file".

I launched the command
dvdauthor -x /home/marco/movie.xml
as you see in the last lines of devede.out that I attached before and the error is:

WARN: skipping sector, waiting for first VOBU...
ERR: SCR moves backwards, remultiplex input

I did some tests and the problem seems related to the fact the vob is not in the format that devede expects to be a dvd compliant file. In fact you have to extract audio and video streams, from dvd, separately (I did this with mplayer from command line) and the authoring process runs ok.
So the bug could be marked as invalid but I would let it "open" because the devede error message is not appropriate (I found a lot of people in some forums that had this problem and didn't find a solution)

The solution that I found is, as I already sayd, extracting audio and video streams separately with mplayer before the authoring process. I did this to extract audio and video from dvd player:

mplayer dvd://1 -dumpvideo -dumpfile title1.m2v -dvd-device /dev/cdrom
mplayer dvd://1 -dumpaudio -dumpfile title1.ac3 -dvd-device /dev/cdrom

and then I multiplexed them in a mpeg file
mplex -f 8 -o title1.mpeg /home/marcop/title1.m2v /home/marcop/title1.ac3

So you can use this mpeg with devede selecting the option "this is already an mpeg dvd compliant file" without problems.

Can you confirm this bug on Jaunty/Karmic?

Alessio,
I can confirm that the same message appears also in Jaunty version of Devede:

"Failed to create the DVD tree
Maybe you ran out of disk space"

I think we have to open a bug in upstream for this. Do you know where can we do this? I have only found DeVeDe forum but not a section where submit a new bug.

You could find some useful information by reading this:

BTW: In karmic there will be the latest upstream release, which seems working fine.

Alessio as you can read from my previous posts I know that the error message is misleading (for example you can read my 2008-10-2 post) and it's not related to insufficient space.

However I will try it on karmic to see if it's fixed there.

Alessio, the issue also happens in karmic (alpha 4). I think, as I already sayd, we should open a new bug in upstream.

Hi all:

I'm the creator of DeVeDe. The error message is somewhat ambiguous because DeVeDe can't know the true reason why SPUMUX fails. That's why it says "Maybe"; it just presumes that the error is (maybe) that you ran out of free disk space :)

Fortunately, in this case the reason is clear and known: VOB files aren't true MPEG-2 files (they have some extra fields that confuses SPUMUX), so you can't mark that checkbox.

I fixed this in version 3.14. You can download it from the official homepage (there's a DEB package for Ubuntu too). In this version you have a new option that repackages the video and audio without recompressing it. It's under the option you are using now. That way SPUMUX will have a file in the right format, and you will have the maximum quality and speed because the video and the audio won't be recompressed. Unfortunately you will be able to have only one audio track (you can choose which one, anyway).

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic already provides your latest release, so we should
mark this as "Fix released".

Alessio,
I already tested devede on karmic (as I already sayd) and the issue is present in that distro so I think we cannot mark this as fix released. I think we should test devede taking it from official homepage.

Raster,
in karmic Alpha (ubuntu 9.10) it's present the version 3.14.0 but the issue is still present. What do you think? It could be a packaging problem? It sounds strange.

The release tarball downloadable from upstream's homepage and that one
available for Karmic are the same.

Marco, it's not a packaging-related issue, as upstream said it's a a
kind of "known issue", which can be workarounded by selecting that
choice mentioned above.
